Reef Seen Conservation Week 2017.

For more than 25 years, Reef Seen has been committed to protecting and preserving Pemuteran's sea, and the marine life that lies beneath, subsequently helping to develop the local marine tourism, creating new business and employment opportunities for the Village of Pemuteran. The success of our efforts in preserving and protecting Pemuteran's marine assets is  the main reason behind our initial "Reef Seen Conservation Week".  Sharing our knowledge and experiences we highlight some of the work done in our continuing efforts as the pioneers of marine conservation in Pemuteran. The occasion was also a time for us to meet up with the other marine environment communities in Pemuteran. Reef Seen organised several events to have a beneficial value to all participants; such as releasing sea turtle hatchlings by groups of Pemuteran students, group discussions, and an underwater clean-up (crown of thorns starfish and drupella removal) during the six days event.
RSWC 2017 is from Pemuteran for Pemuteran, organized and driven by the Reef Seen staff, the majority of who are from Pemuteran)

26 years young

On Sunday, the 1st of October, 2017, and after over a year of delays due to roadworks, rain, high season etc we were finally able to celebrate the 25th, now 26th, anniversary of Reef Seen Diver's Resort 's humble beginnings here in Pemuteran,   The boss hosted a big party, attended by most of Reef Seen's current staff, along with many staff from the past as well as the numerous friends we have made along the way, all of who have been part of helping Reef Seen become what it is today.

THANK YOU TO ALL THE PEOPLE OF PEMUTERAN.

Pemuteran open for business as normal

Image result for mount agung

Dear Tourists and Divers

The threat that Mount Agung will erupt is real and we feel for all our friends and families in Karangasem region.  Many of our staff here are from families that were previously relocated after the last disastrous eruption in 1963.

Reef Seen is located on the beach in Pemuteran, North West Bali, about 140km from the volcano.  We are experiencing no effect from the volcanic activity other than holiday cancellations.  Bali's only source of income is tourism and while we understand you have fear of coming into a danger zone, the island community as a whole will still need your precious business to help in the face of a disaster.

Yes, there is an exclusion zone at the volcano (currently 12km) leaving popular spots such as Amed and Tulamben out of bounds.  But Bali has so much more to offer with a nation of the friendliest people in the world waiting to show you: throughout you find spectacular scenery, rice paddies, temples, lakes, waterfalls, to the west the wilder sea has great surfing and here we offer diving and snorkelling on some of the most extensive coral reefs around.

Pretty much all the normal routes to this beautiful island are still operating so we urge you keep your plans to visit. Should the main airport in Denpasar close, here in Pemuteran we are close to the ferry at Gilimanuk for easy transfer off Bali via Java.

Looking forward to seeing you all

Coming soon to your TV in Canada...

Quebecois television & radio show host Pierre-Yves Lord chose Reef Seen to help with his new TV series "Le Flots" due to be broadcast on Canadian national network TV5 later this year.  Over 26 programmes he will allow viewers in Canada to explore the globe and its underwater world, to discover new cultures and the charm of the people who make it up.  Reef Seen and the village of Pemuteran will feature in the episode for Bali.

PY and the crew from his production company Saturne5, joined by guest co-host, actress Magalie Lépine-Blondeau,  have enjoyed all our facilities at Reef Seen.  Learning about Proyek Penyu, the Reef Gardeners and of course as passionate divers themselves, also explored some of our marine treasures, diving in Pemuteran Bay at the Underwater Temple Garden and BioWreck.

We've had a great time and wish the series every success.

Not such a Lonely Planet

Reef Seen was delighted to welcome representatives from both the Lonely Planet and Kemenpar (Kementerian Pariwisata - Indonesia Tourism). Their short stay at our dive resort was to learn more about our work on local environmental projects to protect our marine world,  to see how Chris Brown has contributed to educate people in Pemuteran to take care of this precious resource. On land they visited Proyek Penyu (The Turtle Hatchery) and in the ocean off-shore we guided them for snorkelling at BioWreck and Close Encounters.

Well actually they moored S/Y Havana in the south of Bali, making the final leg across Bali by car to find out more about our projects. Drawn here initially by Proyek Penyu (The Turtle Hatchey) Marian, Mikkel and the rest of the crew have also discovered the many other aspects of our work here in protecting the local environment.  Those of you glued to Danish TV-2 will have to wait a few months to see this episode....

Protect our precious sea

The Coral Triangle is a vast topical, marine area stretching from Malaysia to the Philippines encompassing Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste & the Solomon Islands, of immense bio diverse significance because it is home to:-
-  76% of the worlds reef building corals, over 500 different species
-  6 out of 7 of marine turtle species
-  37% of the worlds coral reef fish, over 3000 species
-  130 million people depend on its marine resource.
It has been declared a top priority for marine conservation because in spite of its importance, it has many threats, unfortunately most of them from us and our human folly.
Poor marine management
-  Coastal development
-  Destructive fishing using dynamite and cyanide
-  Over fishing
-  Poverty
-  Lack of political will or interest
-  Short term thinking
-  Climate change

The Coral Triangle Initiative on CoralReefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI-CFF) is a multilateral partnership of the six countries in the region, formed to address the urgent threats, working together to sustain the extraordinary marine and coastal resources by addressing crucial issues such as food security, climate change and marine biodiversity.

At their 4th Regional Business Forum, Sustainable Marine Tourism Conference, held in Nusa Dua, Bali in August 2015, Reef Seen founder and owner, Chris Brown, was invited to give a presentation on the work and projects  that he, together with all at Reef Seen, has been doing to protect the seas, sea turtles and local villagers.  At the Gala Dinner held the evening before, the organizers recognized a private company from each of the 6 member countries which has successfully integrated sustainable marine tourism practices, linking these to their local communities.

Reef Seen was selected as the winner from Indonesia.

Our Projects

-  Proyek Penyu (the Turtle Hatchery)
-  Reef Seen Dancers
-  The Reef Gardeners
-  Temple Garden, Bio Wreck, Garden of the Gods (new dive sites)
-  Fresh Water programmes for the village
local Schools support
The Challenges in Pemuteran
-  Poverty
-  Low standard of education
-  Relying on handouts
-  Income from dynamite & cyanide fishing

How did we do it?

-  Time and perseverance - it was slow at first but we have been doing it for over 20 years
-  Trust - observe first, make friends and adapt to the local way to be sustainable
-  Positive approach - demonstrate what can be done, not just dictate what cannot
-  Show not tell
-  Praise for effort - whether right or wrong
-  Show it benefits them - not just someone elses business
-  KISS IT (Keep It Simple Stupid)

Congratulations also to the other 5 winners from Malaysia, Philippines, Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.  Keep up the good work, and continue being positive examples to others.

Thumbs Up!

Paul "Tosh" Tanner,  PADI Regional Manager for Asia Pacific has developed a new programme aimed to help PADI Five Star Dive Centres in the region (like Reef Seen) distinguish themselves even more.

Through a Professional Image and Training Evaluation, PADI inspects and assesses all aspects of the operation including the appearance of the resort inside & out, staff professionalism and conduct and, of course, how scuba diving guests are looked after.

Reef Seen was proud to be invited as a pilot resort for this scheme.  We believe we do everything in the right way, but it was still a bit scary to have "Mr PADI" come to inspect and scrutinize us.....

So it was great to get very positive feed back from our evaluation, but as with anything, there is always room for improvement - we are working on some already.

We hope when you come to stay and dive with us you will feel the difference and have an enjoyable safe experience, in a beautiful place looked after by our professional and friendly staff.

Thank you, Tosh and PADI, for the extra Thumbs Up!!
